Basic Biological Principles

In this chapter you will learn about the basic biological principles. This section is about the two main types of cells which are prokaryotic and eukaryotic. The Prokaryotic cell is carried in mostly bacteria, Eukaryotic cells are found in plants, animals, Fungi, Insects, even you and me. I also will be talking about the different make-up of Plant and animal cells. You will learn about the different organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, etc. In these organelles you will learn about their functions and how they work. You will be given key terms to this section to point out some important vocabulary that will be on the keystone exam. I also have a few review questions that may help you test yourself on this section. There is also an answer key with an explanation on why the answer is correct. The answer key is also there for you to compare how you did with the questions and review the information you read over in this section. This will help you during the keystones because you will have a better understanding on what will be on the test and it’s an easy study guide. I hope you are able to retain the information given below, and do well on your test.

Key words

Prokaryotic

- A unicellular or multicellular organism that that doesn’t have a nucleus.

Eukaryotic

- Organisms that have a nucleus.

Unicellular

- Having a single cell.

Multicellular

- Having more than one cell.

Plasma Membrane

- Membranes of lipids and proteins outside the cytoplasm.

Esstential Questions

  • What are the characteristics of life by all the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?

  • What are the difference between the cellular structures and their functions in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?

Objectives

  • Describe the characteristics of life between the eukaryotic organisms and prokaryotic.

  • Learn the cellular structures and what they do in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.

It's your turn!

Use the information you have recieved above to answer the questions below. when you are finished you can compare your answers to the correct answers on our answer key page.

4. In a short paragraph explain What does Chloroplast do ?

5. In a short paragraph write What are the two main types of cells?

Key terms !

All organisms have five characteristics of life.

  • Obtaining and using energy

  • Maintaining a stable internal state

  • The ability to grow

  • The ability to reproduce

  • Responding to stimuli in the environment

There are two main types of organisms. Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic

-Prokaryotic cells are unicellular organisms that don't have organelles inside such as the nucleus, mitochondria, and chloroplast.

-The Prokaryotic cell is carried in mostly bacteria.

-Eukaryotic cells are multicellular organism that do have membrane bound organelles. Eukaryotic cells contains a nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplast.

-Eukaryotic cells are found in plants, animals, Fungi, Insects.
